Near the little city of Kutna Hora about an hour from Prague in the Czech an average remains. Yet, as with a lot of things, its whats on the inside that issues.

Measure inside the Sedlec Ossuary and you’ll discover it is in fact one of the very uncommon churches you will ever see. Also called the Church of Bone or Bones Church, the Sedlec Ossuary boasts an interior design aesthetic that is outstanding. It’s decorated with the remains of more than 40,000 individuals.

One of the most creative of the bits discovered indoors made are an incredible chandelier and coat of arms made completely of human bones.

You must travel back to 13th century Jerusalem to get to the bottom of why this area exists. A local abbot brought back a jar full of ground that was sacred he scattered on the graveyard of the local church.

It became the hippest spot to get entombed for miles as one might imagine.

As the black death stays needed to be kept in the cellar and eventually piled up. They functioned as a reminder the flesh finishes and this life is transitory.

Centuries after, in the late 1800s, local woodcarver Frantisek Rint was hired to order the bones, and his artistic influence is that which we see now. (We expect he was paid well for such shocking, striking and complex work!)

Atlas Obscura has created this video that was morbid, providing you with other ossuaries around Europe, as well an elaborate history of the church that was creepy.
